Spring and Summer is when our club has many of its major events. Club subsidies are higher for these major events compared to our regular events. If these events are oversubscribed, our normal priority selection system is not used.  A random draw determines who plays.

Grand Torrey Cup

This is an annual competition between our club and members of the Grand Golf Course, a private course in Del Mar. It began several years ago when the Grand approached uson behalf of their members who wanted to experience playing at Torrey Pines GC.

The Grand Torrey Cup matches are typically played in late July. The first round is played at Torrey South and then at The Grand the next day. The format is Fourball Nassau (BB of 2) match play with Ryder Cup-style points. Each team has 24 players divided into 12 matches. The front 9, back 9 and 18 holes are each worth 1 point for a win. Ties are worth a half point. 36 points are at stake each day. The team with the most points over the two days takes home the trophy.

It’s a great benefit for our members as those who qualify to make our team play a practice round and a competitive round at the Grand for a very reasonable price. Each year, our club has several BB of 2 qualifying tournaments during the Spring. They are clearly labelled on our website. Members who win their flight automatically qualify to play on our team.

TPMGC members who have played in these matches really enjoy the competition. They are excited to qualify and when they play, they appreciate the opportunity to play rounds at Torrey South in prime condition and then at the Grand which is always pristine.

SCGA Better Ball Qualifier

The team with the lowest net score in our weekend and weekday qualifying tournaments earns an opportunity to represent our club in SCGA’s Fourball Net Championship. You can only attempt to qualify once. TPMGC pays their entry fee.

Qualifiers are played on North from Green tees or on South from hybrid tees (half Green and half White). If you are not comfortable playing from these tees, you should not sign up for these qualifiers.

The SCGA Fourball Championship is limited to players with an index of 18.4 or less. Members with an index greater than 18.4 attempting to qualify will play the qualifying tournament as an 18.4 index.

All members are eligible to play, but to represent the club in the SCGA Fourball Net Championship, both members must have played in at least 3 tournaments with TPMGC in the most recent 12 months and must have been a TPMGC member for at least one year on the date of the tournament.

Senior Club Championships

You must be age 55 or older as of the date of the first round of the Championship, must have played in at least 3 tournaments with TPMGC in the most recent 12 months and must have been a TPMGC member for at least one year on the date of the tournament.

It is typically conducted over two consecutive weeks with the first round on North and the final round on South. The field is cut from 128 to 120 after round 1.

The gross champion represents our club in SCGA’s gross Tournament of Senior Club Champions if his index satisfies the maximum handicap requirement. TPMGC pays his entry fee.

Super Senior Club Championships

Members age 65 and older who play in the Senior Club Championship are also competing to be Super Senior Club Champion. Super seniors with the lowest net and gross score receive a special championship plaque and additional prize money.

The super senior gross champion represents our club in SCGA’s gross Tournament of Super Senior Club Champions if his index satisfies the maximum handicap requirement. TPMGC pays his entry fee.

Club Championship

This tournament typically takes place during two weekends in August. The format is described on the TPMGC website in the Tournament notes. The net champion in each flight will participate in a playoff to determine the overall net Club Champion. The gross and net club champions represent TPMGC in SCGA’s Tournament of Club Champions. TPMGC pays his entry fee.

You must have played in at least 3 tournaments with TPMGC in the most recent 12 months and must have been a TPMGC member for at least one year on the date of the tournament to be eligible to play.

SCGA Tournament of Club Champions (TOCC)

TPMGC sends four champions to SCGA Club Champion tournaments. Some playoffs may be required to determine who advances.

  1. SCGA Gross TOCC: Club Champion advances
  2. SCGA Net TOCC: there is a playoff among the flight winners from the Club Championship flight winners. One member from this playoff advances.
  3. SCGA Senior Gross TOCC: Senior gross champion advances
  4. SCGA Super Senior Gross TOCC: Senior net champion advances
