All-Member Club Meeting at Alesmith Brewery on Nov 19 at 6 PM (posted 11-7-24)
We are required by our by-laws to have two general membership meetings each year. We had one in June and our second will be coming up on Tuesday November 19 2024 at AleSmith brewery! This is the annual board election meeting, with final voting by acclamation for the slate of 8 candidates for the 8 open 2025/2026 Board positions. As a special added feature, AleSmith is hosting the first round of either a beer or soda for those in attendance! Plus, they are making their “golf simulator” available from 4:30 to 5:45. The Club will be hosting a special par 3 contest on the simulator for all members that arrive during that timeframe. Prizes to be awarded for closest to the pin!

We Won! (Grand/Torrey Championship) (posted 8-2-24)
Five years ago, The Grand, a private Golf Club in Del Mar asked our club if we would be interested in a home and away match. They wanted to offer this is a new benefit for membership at their club as their members were asking for access to play Torrey Pines. We made it happen on short notice in 2019 and now it’s an annual competition where all TPMGC members have a chance to qualify. It’s been a great five-year tradition… with one exception… we lost each year…. until 2024!
The 2024 matches took place at Torrey South on July 30 and at The Grand on July 31. Each of the 12 matches is a Fourball Nassau with 1 point for a win on each 9 and overall (0.5 for a tie). Since The Grand held the Cup, our team needed 36.5 point to capture it while the Grand needed only 36 to keep it. TPMGC prevailed at Torrey South by a score of 20.5-15.5. We have led each year after round 1 and each year The Grand beat us at their course by a larger margin. But not this year. At the Grand, we held on with a score of 16.5-19.5 resulting in an overall match result of Torrey 37 – The Grand 35. A key to our victory was two 3-0 match results at the Grand by the John Hoffman/Duane Admire team and the George Arthur/Isaiah Irey’s team.
We now proudly own the trophy and plan to keep for a long time. When the 2025 tournament schedule comes out, take note of the GT Cup Qualifying events if you want to try to qualify for the 2025 team.

Important Information About Your TPMGC Member Account (posted 8-6-24)
Payment from your member account is automatically taken to pay your tournament fee, penalties and green fees for some away tournaments.
Each member is responsible to ensure there are sufficient funds in his account to make these payments. Your CC on file with the SCGA cannot be used to fund this account, you must use PayPal on the website.
If you sign up for a tournament without enough funds in your account, you will receive at least two system generated emails reminding you to add funds to your account. If you fail to do so prior to the cancellation deadline, you will be removed from the tee sheet without notice. You cannot be reinstated into the tournament, so please ensure you have sufficient funds.
Tournament fees were recently increased to $20 so keep that in mind as you fund your account.
TPMGC Tournament of Champions (posted 2-21-24)
Your Board is pleased to announce a new annual major competition for TPMGC members –
The Tournament of Champions.
This will be a net tournament with 3 champions crowned each year – one each from the green, white and yellow tees. Each champion will receive a commemorative plaque and the honor of winning this competition. Since this will be another major tournament, the prize pool will be significantly larger.
How do you qualify? You must finish first or T1 (net winner only) in your flight in any TPMGC individual 2024 tournament. We already have several qualifiers from tournaments played since January 1. There will be tie breakers in effect if needed.
The tournament will be held during the first weekday tournament at Torrey Pines North in March 2025 and at the same time each year. Those competing from the white teeswill play Wednesday and those competing from green and yellow tees will play Thursday.
We hope you are excited about this new major tournament competition during 2024!

General Membership Zoom meeting on Nov 14 at 6:00 PM (posted 11-11-23)
We can accommodate up to 500 members. Mark your calendars. We look forward to “seeing you virtually” on Tuesday the 14th. (logon to website to access link in MEMBER HOME/CLUB INFO)
There’s a lot of update information to cover. And we will be congratulating many of our members for their winning achievements during the year.
We will answer as many of your questions as we can. This year we ask you to send your questions in advance, it gets a little confusing to have questions asked during the zoom meeting. Please send your questions to Lprosi@san.rr.com by Monday the 13th.
For all those attending, we will be conducting a drawing after the event. All names of attendees will be eligible for some fantastic prizes.

Golf Rules Reminders (August 2023)
To All TPMGC members, the following are some of the many rules of golf but are those that we see most often violated. The following serves as just a reminder of a few
- You can use your range finders on the course. However the SLOPE FUNCTION must be turned off
- When playing any event other than a TP event, be sure to put in your scores HOLE BY HOLE, not just the total score. That way, your handicap will automatically adjust
- Sprinkler Head Rule – the sprinkler head must be within 2 club lengths of the green, the ball must be within 2 club lengths of the sprinkler head and, most importantly, must intervene in the players intended line of play. If these are met the player may drop at his nearest point of relief that is not interfering with his line of play.
- Arriving Late to first tee – if < 5 minutes late, 2 stroke penalty otherwise DQ. No Exceptions. If however you are late and then play in another group, you should play and let TC decide if it’s a DQ.
- Playing the wrong golf ball in match play could mean loss of hole in singles and will be a two-stroke penalty in stroke play.
- Rules in Bunkers – you can touch or move loose impediments in a bunker, but be careful you don’t move your ball when doing so or you’ll get one penalty stroke. You cannot touch the sand with your club next to your ball, or during the backswing for your stroke. You also cannot touch the sand anywhere to test its condition or when making a practice swing les and will be a two-stroke penalty in stroke play.
- Search Time – Once you start searching for your ball, you have three minutes to find it before it is lost.
The Following Policy Update was Effective Aug 1, 2023
Late Cancellation (Home and Away)
A late cancellation is defined as any member who cancels themselves from a subscribed tournament after the cancellation deadline, but before the 48-hour period (No Show Penalty Period). Members who late cancel will have a $15 tournament entry cost deducted from their account and will be moved to the bottom of the waitlist of the next Tournament (home or away). If they have already been assigned a tee time for the next Tournament, they will be moved to the bottom of the waitlist.
In cases where a member late cancels from an “Away” tournament that TPMGC has pre-paid green fees, the applicable green fees will be deducted from the members account in addition to the $15 tournament entry cost.
Late Cancellation Penalty Summary
- $15 tournament entry cost
- Moved to bottom of waitlist for next Tournament
- Course Green Fees deducted from account when applicable
No Show Penalty (Home and Away)
A no show penalty is defined as any member who removes themselves from a tournament within 48 hours of a scheduled event or does not show up for the event. Members who remove themselves from a tournament within 48 hours, or do not show for an event, will have the $15 tournament entry cost deducted from their account, a $30 SUP/City charge deducted from their account, and will be moved to the bottom of the waitlist of the next Tournament. If they have already been assigned a tee time for the next Tournament, they will be moved to the bottom of the waitlist.
In cases where a member does not show at an “Away” tournament that TPMGC has pre-paid green fees, the applicable green fees will be deducted from the members account in addition to the $15 tournament entry cost. The $30 SUP charge will not apply in this case.
The club shall not financially benefit from the $30.00 SUP charge. We will use discretion to pay these fees to the city of San Diego, to the away golf club, or a hybrid of both.
No Show Penalty Summary
- $15 tournament entry cost
- $30 SUP/City fee
- Moved to bottom of waitlist for next Tournament
- Course Green Fees deducted from account when applicable ($30 SUP/City charge would not apply in these cases)
Covid Policy Reminder July 2023
To All Members, with the recent rise in Covid occurrences, we continue to experience members having to cancel out of tournaments. The following is a reminder of our Club’s Covid Policy.
• If you have signed up for a tournament and need to cancel after the late cancelation period, or you will be a no show, you must submit a positive test (home test ok) to Larry Prosi and the respective Tournament Coordinator.
• You must then wait a minimum of 5 days and then submit a negative test, in order to again be eligible to play in any TP tournament.
• Please note even if you have Covid, there are no waivers to the “late cancel or no show” Penalty Policy (See Penalty Policy on the website).
Obviously this policy is for the protection of all our members and we appreciate your volunteer cooperation in notifying us immediately. If you have questions please contact Larry Prosi…
Two-Day Tournaments
See our recently added description of 2-day tournaments: 2-Day Tournaments (It’s located in the TOURNAMENTS pulldown)
TPMGC Rain Policy Reminder
To all TPMGC members, given the recent flurry of rainy days, with some of those interrupting our play, it seems appropriate to “remind” all members of our CLUB’S RAIN POLICY. The following is an excerpt from our policy…full policy on the website: Inclement Weather Cancellation Policy
- It is the policy that all tournaments will be played as long as the course is open, even if carts are limited to cart paths only. Any cancellation or modification of a tournament due to extraordinary weather conditions will be communicated as soon as a decision is reached. Members should monitor their emails the night before and the day of the tournament to determine the status. Members failing to show will be assessed a No Show or Late Cancellation Penalty, to be determined by the committee
- Tournaments held at Torrey Pines are always played unless the course managers determine that the course is closed.
- If the course is open, but it is raining, then the Tournament Chairs shall make a determination on whether to cancel. Cancelling would only be done if the course agrees not to penalize the club.
- If the tournament is not cancelled, but heavy rains occur during the tournament, the Tournament Chairs can suspend tournament play. No tournament fees shall be collected, but green fees will not be refunded unless the course agrees.
The important point to bear in mind is that any tournament cancellation can only be done with the concurrence of the course we are playing. Not all courses will agree to our cancellation with no penalty for those that don’t show. Thus our policy reflects the fact that “we play unless we are told not to”. If you have questions please submit to any board member or via our Website Contact Page.
Tournament Awards for Events Conducted at Torrey Pines
Beginning Sept 2022, awards for tournaments conducted at Torrey Pines (except for skins) are transferred to the Torrey Pines pro shop and credited to a member account ledger maintained by the pro shop. When a member wins a Torrey South/North tournament award, his winnings are first credited to his website account then immediately debited. The following is a screenshot of a member account for which a Torrey tournament award has been added then subtracted (the purpose of recording the transaction on our website is so that each member has a website record of all tournament winnings including those conducted at Torrey Pines… note that the balance before/after the transaction is the same):
Deposits to one’s website account are made automatically by winning an away tournament award, a skins award at a Torrey Pines tournament, or funds may be added manually via website PayPal/credit card deposit. Manual deposits are made on website at MY ACCOUNT/ADD FUNDS.
Torrey Pro Shop funds can be used for any soft goods purchased including the new TPMGC shirts and hats as well as Torrey golf carts ($32 discounted rate anytime, not just tournament days!) and Torrey driving range. You must have funds in your Pro Shop account to qualify for the $32 discounted cart on non-tournament days.
Manual transfer of website member account funds to your Torrey pro shop account may be made via our website at MY ACCOUNT/CERTIFICATES. Here’s a screenshot of the webpage for transfer of funds to Torrey pro shop:
Rain Today Gone Tomorrow
Rain on tournament day is a rarity for our Torrey tournaments. But it struck on Wednesday (Mar 1st). Wet weather caused a cancellation of the first day of our 2-day tournament scheduled for Mar 1/2. Here’s a photo of some club members who happily “played in the rain” just for the fun of it. |
May 17 2022 General Club Meeting
Well over 100 club members attended our club meeting at Torrey Pines Golf Range. Before the meeting we had a putting contest with Roger White winning the big bucks among 68 contestants who paid a $3 entry fee. But it wasn’t money wasted since entry included a free Torrey logo golf ball. Our club prez Larry Prosi conducted the meeting and reports from board members detailed status of current issues. In between club business, Bob Hood conducted a raffle of $1000 of merchandise which included certificates for free rounds for local golf courses and merchandise from the Torrey Pro Shop including items with our TPMGC club logo, which will soon be available for purchase on our website.
Ted Cochrane, club member and business owner, graciously supplied pizza for our meeting. Pizza was freshly prepared, plentiful, and absolutely delicious. Wheat and Water. Great pizza!
See their website at Wheat and Water.
Pace-of-Play Policy Update May 15, 2022
A new pace-of-play policy has been adopted by our TPMGC Board of Directors. The new policy will be effective on June 1, 2022. See website Pace-of-Play Policy for details —–>>>>
Important Tournament Rules Announcement:
The tournament committee has recently seen two activities that violate the rules of golf and needs to stop immediately.
· Players must putt out. There are no “gimmie” putts. Even during COVID-19 restrictions you must hole out your putt. Not holing out will cause disqualification from the event.
· Scores must be confirmed in Golf Genius no more than 15 minutes after the completion of your round. If it takes longer than 15 minutes, or a discrepancy in scoring is noted, you need to contact the Tournament Coordinator (TC) to inform them of the change. Changing a score in Golf Genius after the 15-minute period without TC knowledge will subject you to disqualification or suspension.
We are aware that other groups may allow one or more of these practices but that’s not Torrey Pines Men’s Golf Club. The only fair way to play is for everyone to play by the established rules.
One additional Comment – Your finish time is now recorded at completion of round by GG. The Club’s current Pace of Play standard is “to finish no more than 15 minutes behind the group in front and take no more than 4 hours and 20 minutes to complete the round.”. Any group exceeding these standards will be contacted by the TC for an explanation.
Scorekeeping During Club Tournaments Using Golf Genius (GG)
The GG cell phone app replaces scorecards as the official record of your official tournament score. Years ago, when we used printed scorecards, once you signed your card and left the golf course, you could not change it. Your score was final. The same is true with GG. After completing your round, all members of the foursome should immediately verify their scores on each hole and total scores are correct. The time you enter your final scores is your official finish time and is used to track pace of play. If you find errors in your GG scores on your cell phone, you may take time to correct the scores. This should take no more than 15 minutes. Once you have left the golf course, your scores cannot be changed. If you failed to enter your score for one or more holes, you will be DQ’d. If you run into any technical problems with entering your scores, you must immediately contact the Tournament Coordinator or another Board Member and explain the problem.
Tournament E-mails
It is important that each golfer read all emails from the Tournament Coordinators as they can contain important information about the tournament you are about to play in including items such as lift, clean and place (or lack thereof).
If you receive a tournament email, that means you signed up for the tournament. If you did not intend to sign up or if someone else signed you, up don’t ignore these emails. Cancel your entry.
Share Your Contact Information with Other Members
Our new website has several features that make it a vast improvement over our former website. One of them is the opportunity for members to better communicate with other members via email or phone.
Each member has the choice of making his contact information visible to other club members. The default setting for each member is that your email address and phone # is NOT visible to other members. To make it visible, follow these instructions:
- Log on
- Go to “My Account”
- Click “Edit Info”. This is where you can indicate your cart preference and check the box that shares your email address and phone number with other members
To find contact info for other members, go to Club Info and Membership Roster to look up the member. Click on the member you are looking for and if he has decided to make his email/phone visible, you will be able to contact him directly.
City Resident Cards
You may only renew your card online. If you arrive at the golf course with an expired card, they will not renew it. You will have to pay the non-resident fee. Then once you renew your card, you will be able to request a refund for the difference between the resident and non-resident rate.
